I don't know about you but i love tuna! i could probably eat it like everyday........but tuna contains mercury........ in march of 2001 the food & drug administration (FDA)issued a statement warning pregnant women and young children not to eat fish containing high levels of Mercury because it causes neurological problems in children..............................yet the centers of disease control and prevention (CDC) now recommends that these same women and young children (ages 6-59months) should get influenza vaccines......many influenza vaccines contain mercury, from the preservative thimerosal, in amounts greater than the EPA recommended safe levels.
Today, some vaccines like the influenza vaccine, contain as much at 25 micrograms of mercury, over 10 times the safe limit for an infant and roughly 2 times over the safe limit for adults.
You can ask for mercury free...........
Mercury contating influenza vaccines in 2008/2009
FluLaval- GlaxoSmithkline:25 mcg of mercury
Fluvirin- Chiron: 25 mcg of mercury
Fluzone-Sanofi pasteur: multi-dose 5 mL vial, 25 mcg of mercury
Mercury-Free influenza vaccine-2008/2009
fluMist-medimmune: approved for children 2years and older, mercury free
Fluarix- GlazoSmithKline: mercury-free
Fluzone-sanofi Pasteur: request pre-filled syringe, mercury free version
All of this info is from safeminds there is a lot more that i didn't put in my blog that makes me not want the flu shot like statistics on the shot.....but the mercury is what started my research on other ingredients in the vaccine. another resource is vaclib......i have list of other resources but i don't want to type them...so if you would like to look at them i can give them to you in person.
Im not stating that you and your family is wrong for getting the flu shot....im just stating what i just found out and keep finding the more i do research...but like i said before you and your family makes the choices not me :)
I opted to eat tuna while pregnant (I craved tuna salad flat bread sandwiches from Subway- even ate one during labor!), and skipped the flu shot (in fact, I still skip it, and don't plan on giving it to my kids). That's just me. :)
ReplyDeleteThumbs up to the Flu shot. If your doctor is worth anything, they will consider all factors and options when giving a flu shot. I have the flu and have felt near death, honestly, hospitalized and all. A person can find pro's and con's to almost any medical condition, treatment, etc, out there. One thing I have found is the internet can be your best friend, but also cause unnecessary worry. I have found that consulting my doctor, and being clear with them about health concerns is best. Heck, if you look you can find those out there who assert that smoking isn't all that bad for you.
